After Surgery

Immediately after LASIK surgery

After your entire LASIK surgery has been completed, your surgeon will have you sit up in the surgical chair and give you some information of what you might expect in the upcoming days and weeks after the procedure.

Your vision most likely will not be clear for the first several hours. Your eye sight should be significantly improved after the first night sleep. Because of this, it is always advised that somebody accompany the patient home from surgery. Driving is NOT recommended.

For the first 1-6 months

Your eyes will be very sensitive, and minor discomfort or pain is normal. Make sure to avoid touching them at all costs (you may dislocate the corneal flap before it heals).

  • Use any anti-inflammatory or antibiotic eye drops given to you immediately upon any sensations of irritation, discomfort or swelling in you eyes.
  • Use an eye shield to protect your eyes from scratches while you're asleep.
  • Use dark sunglasses in daylight if you're experiencing any heightened sensitivity to light.

Avoid any overly physical activities where your eyes might be physically harmed. Any sports with projectiles, such as racquetball are not a wise decision during this time.

Keep in mind: most people do not experience the full impact of the surgery immediately after the operation. Typically the effects are seen gradually over a period of 1-6 months.
