Kentucky Lake is an impoundment (reservoir) on the Tennessee River...it was the first of several impoundments started back in the 1930's by the Tennessee Valley Authority, a Federally funded organization developed to administer flood control in the Tennessee River Valley. The project was begun in earnest in 1939 and I remember my Dad jerking slab crappie out of it as early as 1948....I was only 4 at the time, but I was impressed by the numbers and size of the fish.
Kentucky Dam is the beginning of KY Lake and is located approximately seventeen miles upriver from the mouth of the Tennessee where it flows into the Ohio River near Paducah, KY. The first thing one notices is that the Tennessee River flows NORTH from Tennessee and cuts the state of Kentucky in half. Well, maybe not exact halves, but one cannot go from extreme western KY to any other part of the state without crossing the Tennessee and stay in KY. The area between KY Lake and the Mississippi River is known as "The Jackson Purchase" and the area immediately to the east of Kentucky Lake is a land mass called Land Between the Lakes.
