Komos Books was originally intended as a small independent publisher specializing in comic novels. But necessity is the mother of adjustment. While we remain small and independent, we are now dedicated to publishing the comic novels of Paul Wiebe.
A word about the “comic” novel. Behind Molière’s statement, that it is tough to make “serious” people laugh, there is the irony that fine comedy is a way of being serious. Certain high-minded people often miss this point. They consider laughter as inferior to solemnity and comedy as merely trivial entertainment. To the extent that they tolerate or even enjoy comic films, plays, stories, and novels, they prefer them with a teardrop at the end.
We do not despise the solemn among us. Far from it. We would like to convert them. But our sights are set first on those who have already seen the light. Our purpose is to have them join us in celebrating the comic spirit. We think Berthold Brecht and Hannah Arendt were right in saying that comedy deals with human sufferings in a more serious way than tragedy and drama.
