Title
Kolech - Religious Women's Forum
Description
The Religious Women's Forum, established in July 1998, advances the status of observant women in both the public and private spheres. The Religious Women's Forum is the only apolitical, nationwide organization dedicated to the advancement of women within the framework of Jewish Law (Halacha). The Forum seeks to encourage the advancement of religious women within the religiously observant orthodox community. The role of religious women in contemporary social, communal, and religious frameworks reflects a significant gap between their capabilities and potential and the actual extent of their influence. While religiously observant women both in Israel and throughout the world occupy positions of leadership in the workplace and in society, their voice continues to be almost unheard regarding matters of religious observance and Jewish communal life. Women have little influence on their children's education and are for the most part excluded from the decision-making leadership positions in religious matters.
To be sure, there have been significant fundamental changes. A modest revolution has quietly taken place within religious education. Many study institutes have been established all over Israel for the teaching of advanced Jewish studies, including Talmud, to post-high school women. In the not-too-distant past, such institutes were unthinkable. Women are also developing innovative ceremonies to mark life cycle events that in the past were limited to boys and men (Bat Mitzvah, naming rituals upon the birth of a girl, etc.). They are also demanding greater participation in religious ritual, including the establishment of women's prayer groups.
To design and modify school curricula that raise awareness among educators of the importance of the changing role of religiously observant women.
