Title

Knight and Gibbins English clock manufacturers Clocks housebells chronometers timepieces

Description

Tony Knight and Paul Gibbins first established their clockmaking business in the East End of London. They had both trained to be designers and makers of furniture, learning their practical skills first at school in the 1950's when woodwork was still part of the school curriculum, and later at college in London under the guidance of skilled craftsmen - journeymen cabinetmakers of the 'old school'.

A shared fascination for timepieces led them in 1972 to form a partnership and re-direct their combined skills towards clockcase making, a trade that evolved in the 17th century when longcase clocks first appeared. The move to their present workshops in Sudbury, an ancient market town in Suffolk, took place in 1977. The company has remained small.
