FHANA is the North American affiliate of Het Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (The Friesian Horse Studbook), also known as the FPS. This registry was founded in 1879 in the Netherlands and has more than 40,000 registered horses and 12,000 members living on every inhabited continent. Inspectors from the Dutch Studbook carefully inspect and grade the horses.
The (Dutch) registry, Friesch Paarden-Stamboek (FPS), is much more highly regulated than United States-based horse registries. Most Friesian horses are graded at least twice in their lives and only a small number of stallions are approved for breeding.
