Description
After presiding over KMA's digressions for the last eight years our erstwhile 'squiggle' logo has been retired. Its replacement is inspired by yet another reworking of a graphic element from the extraordinary eighteenth century novel, The Life & Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.
When Laurence Sterne first published Tristram Shandy in the mid eighteenth century he included, amongst other visual jokes, a marbled page in Volume III. Describing it as 'the motley emblem of my work', Sterne suggests that this page might serve as a map of his chaotic and digressive text. However, this is no ordinary map. Sterne's use of the marbled page ensured that every copy of Tristram Shandy would describe an entirely different route exclusively for that reader. It is a property of the hand marbling process that every sheet is unique and in the mid eighteenth century there were, of course, no mechanical means of reproduction. On page 169 of Volume III of Tristram Shandy the printer had to abandon the uniformity of the printing press. Every marbled page in every printed copy is different.
The way in which no two early editions of Tristram Shandy can be the same is just one of many examples of the digressive, active and unique relationship between author and reader that Tristram Shandy pioneered. It is therefore unsurprising that Sterne is increasingly hailed as the forefather of hypertext and other non linear narrative techniques.
