While this page will let you know more about the lifestyle that we live here in the Alaska bush, it also has some things about our kennel, breeding program and the unique challenges that life in the "last frontier" presents for a working German Shepherd kennel. Our town is unique in the sense that it is in interior Alaska and it is not accessible by road for six months out of the year. We do have regular flights by bush plane at least twice a day. I say at least twice a day but I should also say weather permitting. There are weeks that we get no plane at all. Eagle Alaska is located on the world famous Yukon river, only a few miles from the Canadian border. It is a beautiful town with a rich history.
Eagle was established around 1900 during the klondike gold rush. The reasons the miners came to establish Eagle was one that continues to bring people to this area today, less taxation and more freedom. The miners had to pay a huge amount of tax in Canada and they decided to move just over the American border to form a new town that would not be subject to the high taxes that they were forced to pay. Unfortunately the gold that was found in the area was not substantial compared to that found in the Dawson area. The founders of Eagle all got together and put their gold together. Then they divided it up to just a few men who would travel back to Dawson. There the miners bought rounds at the bar and had the saloon owner hold their gold for them while they were in town. Each man did his part at spreading the news of the big gold strike just over the border. Soon Eagle was a booming mining town and lots were divided and sold. Not long after this, the government decided order was needed in the area and they sent in the military to form Fort Egbert. This along with the only judge for thousands of square miles and they were able to maintain law and order. As with many of the mining towns of the time, they lived and died by the color of the pan and Eagle was not much different. Soon the miners were finding gold in Fairbanks and Nome and most of the miners left Eagle. This depleted the population a great deal but the town survived this delicate time. At the lowest point Eagle had just nine residence but maintained the town business until things turned around.
There was something special that kept Eagle alive and I believe it is the same thing keeping it alive today. The peacefulness of the mountains and the great Yukon river. There is also a complete lack of materialism. The kids are raised to respect people and to not look down on others. To respect peoples opinion and to not look down on those that are different. Eagle gives many the peace that they have never been able to find in their life. It is like no other place I have ever been and has so much to offer. The real beauty is it will only offer it to a few. The weather, location and job prospects limit the amount of population that will ever come to this area. This is why the people here feel that Eagle was meant for them.
