Title

KERNERSVILLE FRIENDS MEETING :: You Are Welcome Among Friends

Description

Kernersville Friend’s Meeting became established through the Faith and Energy of Myrtle and Shephard Nelson. In 1906, a tent revival was held in Kernersville. Myrtle Nelson’s heart was open to opportunities for service. She began Sunday School classes, teaching young people and holding classes for children at home on the corner of Mountain and Cherry Street. The corner of Kernersville Friend’s Meeting was an outgrowth of these classes. Myrtle Wanda Felts Nelson and her husband, Romulus Shephard Nelson gave the land on which the white frame meeting house was built in 1908. These were 33 charter members, 4 associate members.

New Garden Quarterly Meeting of Friends was held at New Garden Meeting house, July 10th, 1909, and approved there be an established monthly meeting at Kernersville – July 24th, 1909. Kernersville Friends held their first monthly meeting, a membership of 110. New Garden Monthly Meeting continued to help support Kernersville Friends until 1947, when we became self-sufficient.

In the early days of the Meeting, Ministerial students from Guilford College preached for the meeting. There were times when attendance dropped to almost the vanishing point. With the coming of a young resident minister, Harold Ritzie, at the close of World War II, interest began to increase which began a steady growth. The first parsonage was purchased when Harold Ritzie was pastor. It was later sold.
