Keren Kolot Educational Institute
Description
Keren Kolot is an educational institute dedicated to developing new options for Jewish learning and expression and to fostering a positive relationship between Diaspora Jews and the Land of Israel. Keren Kolot is based at Kibbutz Ketura which is located in southern Israel in the Arava Valley.
In 1987 Kibbutz Ketura received the Speaker of the Knesset's Award for Quality of Life recognizing the community's achievement in co-existence among religiously observant and non-observant Jews. The kibbutz decided to use the $10,000 money to found an educational center dedicated to studying the many voices within the Jewish tradition. With young people as well as adults, from Israel and abroad, the Keren Kolot Educational foundation explores Jewish texts from a pluralistic perspective, and studies the remarkable lessons of the desert against the backdrop of a uniquely Jewish community - the kibbutz.
Since its inception as a small intensive summer study program ten years ago, Keren Kolot has expanded to become a major force in the educational curriculum of Diaspora youth visiting Israel, hosting some 6,000 people a year in many programs lasting from a half-day seminar to a three month Hebrew Ulpan. In addition, Keren Kolot has expanded its programming for Israeli youth, for families and for retirees, and has consistently provided seminars for special groups who could not afford full expenses, such as physically and mentally handicapped adults and children and Ethiopian and Russian immigrants.
