Title

USNSCC Kentucky Division

Description

In September of 1990, I was contacted by a Mr. David I. Carter, President of the Central Kentucky Navy League Council. He was refered to me by the Naval Reserve Recruiter, PO2 Daniel Medlock - Lexington, Ky. Mr. Carter asked me if I would be interested in forming a Sea Cadet program here at Lexington. The only knowledge about the program that I had was when my ship, the USS MOOSBRUGGER, picked up 7 cadets in Rota, Spain on our way home to Charleston, SC. They worked hard during the underway deployment and met their parents on the pier when we arrived. I told Mr. Carter that I might be interested since my request for active reserve status was on hold. During the course of 8 months, we had several meetings in his office located in the Administration Building at the University of Kentucky. It was there that we received our Division name, KENTUCKY DIVISION, named after the new trident class submarine, USS KENTUCKY (SSBN-737). The USS LEXINGTON was mentioned at one time, but she was being decommissioned and moved from Pensacola, FL to Corpus Cristi, TX as a floating museum. Next, we found our home at the Naval Reserve Center on Vo Tech Drive in Lexington. A co-worker of mine, a former HM3 named Ray Adams helped to recruit several cadets from the Versailles, Ky area. We had our first meeting in the spring of 1991. The unit has grown significantly since then. Several former cadets have gone on to join the Armed forces and have successful lives as service men or women. Our unit is at an all time high right now, with a large number of cadets on roster and a very active schedule. We will continue to grow and develop the Unit into a thriving division of a highly successful organization.
