Kandiyohi Power Cooperative

Description

Kandiyohi Power Cooperative (KPC) was organized in November, 1935 under the cooperative laws in the State of Minnesota to furnish, improve and expand electric service to its members in the West Central area of Minnesota. Authority to form such a cooperative came from the passage of the Rural Electrification Act which was signed by President Franklin Roosevelt on May 11, 1935. KPC is governed by an elected nine-person board of directors who establish the policies of the cooperative and hires the general manager.

The first distribution line was energized on October 25, 1938 from a substation owned by Northern States Power located at New London, MN. KPC presently serves over 7,300 customers in Kandiyohi, Swift, and Chippewa Counties. Its headquarters are located at 1311 Hwy. 71 NE, Willmar, MN. The customers of KPC are primarily residential and farm accounts, along with seasonal cabin owners and several hundred small commercial accounts.

At the present time, KPC has 33 employees and in 1996 had kilowatt hour sales in excess of 120 Million kilowatt hours. Total revenue for the year was slightly over $8 million.
