Description
For Mothers and Babies in Canberra was initially the vision of a small group of people in the Canberra community who wanted to do something practical to support pregnant women who were without appropriate accommodation and support.
accommodates up to three women at any stage during pregnancy and/or for up to three months after the birth of their baby. Erin House, our transitional house facility, opened in December 2003, accomodates up to four women. About 30 additional clients access support through our outreach program and visit the house for advice, counseling, support and casework. We are also available to clients who wish to telephone anonymously for counseling, support and/or information during times of crisis.
There is no restriction on age, however our clients tend to be teenagers and women in their early twenties. The majority of our clients present with a complexity of health and welfare needs. Many are homeless or have lived transient lifestyles. Most have been abused either within their birth families, in foster placements or former relationships. Mental health problems, drug use and domestic violence are some of the issues our clients are attempting to deal with during their pregnancies.
