madels and Sam age 5. Orkney is a group of 45 small Islands with a population of 21,000 it is situated off the most Northern tip of Scotland 150 miles from Shetland .
Judith started her business when she was just 18yrs old and originally made leatherwork. She was 21 when she moved to her existing premises,a large 2,200quare foot shop opposite St Magnus Cathedral which had once been Orkneys very first supermarket! Judith went from paying no rent on her previous shop to £100 a week in 1979 in her current Broad Street premises and as she pyhsically could not produce enough leatherwork to pay her overheads she decided to branch out into knitwear design, hence the beginning of Orkney Island Knitwear.
There was already a skilled knitting workforce in Orkney to help to make her very first small collection which mainly consisted of bright stripey knitwear- very popular in the Eighties! The knitwear collection is designed by Judith and made in Orkney it has evolved over the years and Judith is very much influenced by Orkneys surrounding environment and its ancient past with its colourful land and seascapes.Nearly all the products you see on-line are unique to Judith including the Orkney hamper selection which begun as a seperate part of the business in 1986 and all the shop gifts have also been personally selected by Judith.Many items are simply just not available to buy anywhere else in the world.
