Vocation does not come from willfulness. It comes from listening. I must listen to my life and try to understand what it is truly about - quite apart from what I would like it to be about - or my life will never represent anything real in the world, no matter how earnest my intentions.
It all started with my beloved Siamese mix, Mehitabel. She was the kind of cat – sweet, vulnerable, playful – who engenders deep love and loyalty. She loved to fetch pipe cleaners twisted to look like spiders, to sleep under tents made of the New York Times, and to eat asparagus in her seat at the dinner table. Mehitabel was one of those once-in-a-lifetime companions.
This beloved friend developed soiling problems. First it was puddles on the floor. Over time it became puddles and strategically placed feces. These changes in behavior signaled to me that she was in distress, distress that I desperately wanted to understand and remedy.
