Description
Joel Penland, a native of Upstate South Carolina took his first underwater photograph in 1977 with an Ikelite housed Polaroid SX-70 camera. Since that time he has become qualified as an advanced open water scuba instructor, basic cave diver, commercial diver, hyperbaric medic, underwater welder, underwater NDT inspector, inspection diver, rebreather diver etc...He has made numerous dives at locations ranging from the zero visibility muck of the Mississippi Delta at Venice, Louisiana to the crystal clear azure blue waters of Papua New Guinea.
The Element of water adds special and interesting lighting characteristics to photography. Joel Penland enjoys the challenge of working with natural and artificial light in any underwater condition or situation.
