Japingka Gallery was formed in 1995 to promote the art and culture of Indigenous Australia. It grew from the work of Desert Designs which began marketing Aboriginal art and designs in 1984. Japingka Gallery is based in an historic two story building in the heart of Fremantle. Three gallery spaces provide over 330 square metres of exhibition space.
Ian Plunkett helped establish the Aboriginal design based company, Desert Designs, in Europe, and was involved in marketing Aboriginal art in London and Europe from 1989. Ian has been co-director of Japingka Gallery since 1995. He has been a founding member of the national body for Indigenous art, The Australian Indigenous Art Trade Association (ART.TRADE), and was first elected President of that organization in 2002 and re-elected in 2005/6.
