The American writer, essayist, playwright, novelist, poet& civil rights activist James Baldwin was born on the 2nd August, 1924 in Harlem, New York, United States to Emma Berdis Jones, a single African-American mother. Later, his mother Berdis Jones married David Baldwin who was a preacher. However, David and his adopted son James maintained a difficult relationship throughout their life. Baldwin studied at the prestigious New York’s De Witt Clinton Public High School.
