Welcome to Jain Spirit Online
Description
Once upon a time, a dream was born. At Harvard University in Boston, during a conference on Jainism and Ecology, a group of Jains from England and North America felt that we must start a quality magazine for Jains. A magazine which is in English, with good pictures and articles, good design – something that can be sold in bookshops and displayed in public libraries. A magazine that could go all over the world, and help us share our culture and values globally. A forum where the ‘Why Generation’ could get some real answers to their endless questions.
Quality – that was our intention from the start. How can we produce quality, regularly and consistently? Quality requires skill, concentration and perseverance. Where do we get the good articles and pictures from? It was not difficult for us to see that we needed a full-time office with a dedicated editorial team to achieve this. Yet, the Jain community in the West had never before hired professionals to manage a community project.
The founding Chairman, Mr. Satish Kumar, persuaded Dr. Atul Shah, who was a University Lecturer at the time, to give up his job to work full-time for Jain Spirit. Despite having a permanent job and a young family, Atul gave this up for the cause of global understanding of Jainism. He brought with him the skills of a scholar, a community leader (having been founder of the global Young Jains movement), a teacher and a writer – a unique combination.
