This is an econometric paper that examines the subject of trade orientation and economic performance. The authors, Issidor Iliev and Nazim Osmancik, attempt to provide an answer to the question of whether international openness is an engine for growth by analyzing cross-sectional data on 39 developing countries over a 30-year period. In their discussion, the authors review the relevant empirical research, present a conceptual model, discuss their ideal and actual data, present regression results and their interpretation, and suggest future related research topics.
The authors find a significant positive relationship between trade openness and growth, with the effect of trade being smaller in the period after the oil shock of the early 1970s. However, the effect of trade on economic performance appears sensitive to exclusion of certain observations from the sample.
