Description
About the Special Constabulary
There is little known about the origin of the Isle of Man Special Constabulary apart from a passing mention in a publication covering the history of the Manx Constabulary. The year 1868 is thought to have seen the first permanent force of 160 men raised, properly appointed, sworn in and retained. They were at that time however, not called upon for the performance of any normal Police duties, but held in reserve in the event of an uprising of any kind.
Today, however, our force is a well trained, modern body of volunteers who are properly selected and are almost totally integrated with the Regular Force.
As with the Isle of Man Constabulary, the Special Constabulary is not run under the Home Office in London. Instead it is run under the Home Affairs Department of the Isle of Man Government.
