Title
Island West Alpacas: Alpaca Breeding and Gifts
Description
Our alpaca adventure began in an airplane. Brian noticed an article in a magazine while on a business trip. The gentle nature of alpacas attracted him, as well as the investment potential. Frieda had boarded horses as a child and knew the work required to raise livestock-not to mention the pain from being kicked! The positive aspects of alpacas won her over, as well as her first alpaca kick-much gentler than a horse!
The next two years were spent reading articles, scanning web sites, visiting farms, attending the Alpaca Association of Western Washington's Alpacapalooza Show, and becoming an associate member of AOBA.
In January of 2002 we purchased three alpacas from Vashon Island Alpacas. In April we purchased a female from Caviar & Shoo's Alpacas. While the animals were boarded we cleared land, built a barn and fenced. This spring and summer saw the arrival of our first crias. While their Dams are being rebred at Caviar & Shoo's our pasture grass is growing and we will be ready for our animals in September!
