The development of an ever-closer European Union over the last 40 years has brought great benefits to the peoples of the Union. Prosperity, equality, peace and true independence have flowed for Ireland. By pooling our sovereignty, that very sovereignty and our place in the world have grown. Europe has enabled us to increase our national and individual freedoms in co-operation with our neighbours. As a nation, our experience of the evolving Europe has been both positive and empowering. The Union now faces the challenge of extending this zone of democracy, peace and prosperity to Central and Eastern Europe. This is an historic, economic, social, environmental, political and moral opportunity that we must grasp.
Ireland for Europe was formed following the 2001 vote on the Nice Treaty, with the aim of campaigning for a second referendum in 2002 and securing the Treaty's ratification in that referendum. We are a voluntary national organisation without affiliation whose membership spans the broadest range of political opinion and is open to anyone who shares its aims. Ireland for Europe believes that Ireland must remain at the heart of the European Union and that the Treaty of Nice is necessary to ensure an effective and enlarged Union.
