Western Union stops telegram service. This somehow seems tragic to me, even though I can only think of one case in which a telegram ever appeared in my life.
During the spring of my senior year in high school, I was waiting to hear back from colleges to know whether I'd gotten in. The first such letter that arrived was a telegram from Harvey Mudd College. Of course, since it was a telegram, it was in a very thin envelope, and as a result, my oldest brother was convinced I hadn't gotten in. I hadn't really given too much thought to the "thin envelope == rejection, thick envelope == acceptance" thing, and he didn't mention it to me, so I was still optimistic. And when I opened it up, I saw that it said that I had been accepted, and they wanted to let me know quickly, and that an official letter would follow.
It's not like anyone pays attention to them, unless they get woken up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. At which point, they're hoping that the car gets stolen, just so it will shut up.
