Title

International Firefighters Day - 4th May - www.firefightersday.org

Description

In late 1998 the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Australia prompted worldwide email discussions about the need for a common symbol, such as a ribbon, which could be worn to honour firefighters (much like the wearing of a red ribbon symbolises AIDS support and awareness). At this time it was also discussed that there was no common international date set aside to recognise firefighters' sacrifices and commitment.

After weeks of discussion a proposal was composed and emailed out across the world and the word has spread, dare we say it, like wildfire. Now many countries and fire departments worldwide recognise International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) - May 4th as an important date in their diaries and participate in the annual Sound Off. The day is getting closer that IFFD will be formally recognised by the UN and added to their list of international dates.
