This year we are celebrating our 24th year serving musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world. In 1981 Jay Ifshin, a violin maker trained at the violin making school in Salt Lake City, bought a small violin shop in Berkeley that had been in business since the 1930's. At that time, there were only two part-time employees serving mostly local customers. Today, there are 16 of us still assisting local customers, but also working with musicians and students from all over the nation and the world. Over the past 23 years, Ifshin Violins has become the largest violin shop in the western United States and one of the leading string instrument specialists in the world. Our fine instrument and bow collection continues to grow in size and quality, drawing customers from all over the world. In 1985 we sent out our first discount mail order catalog offering the lowest prices on all of your favorite strings and accessories. Twelve years ago we began offering the Jay Haide violins, violas and cellos which have afforded string musicians beautifully handmade instruments with excellent tone at reasonable prices. Nine years ago, we purchased a small local instrument rental business and since that time the number of instruments being rented has increased fourfold.
