Description

The International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC) was founded as the Cold War was being waged with particular bitterness between the nations of the Eastern and Western Worlds. The intent was to provide a forum where scholars of both sides might meet and communicate about matters of mutual interest in the history of technology. ICOHTEC was constituted as a Scientific Section within the Division of the History of Science of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS/DHS) at the XIIth International Congress for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Paris in August 1968. Through IUHPS, ICOHTEC is associated with UNESCO, but it has always functioned as a fully autonomous body with its funding dependent on its membership.

The first president was Professor E. Olszewski of Poland, with vice-presidents Professor S. V. Schuchardine of the USSR and Professor Melvin Kranzberg of the USA. The first Secretary-General was Professor Maurice Daumas of France, through whose initiative the French government hosted the first independent symposium outside an International Congress at Pont-a-Mousson in July 1970. Symposia have been held almost every year, and the proceedings of many meetings have been published, although in a variety of forms.

The rapid political changes that transformed the world since 1991 led to a restructuring of ICOHTEC as a society of individual members rather than national delegations. Members pay annual dues of $25 and institutions $100. The subscription includes the ICOHTEC journal ICON and a newsletter appearing two or three times a year.
