Description
When the National Institute for Healthcare Research (NIHR) was founded in 1991, the consensus within the healthcare community was that spirituality and religion had little relevance in clinical research, education, or care. NIHR was one of a few pioneering voices dedicated to looking objectively at the potential role spirituality might play in physical, mental, and social health.
During this first decade of NIHR's existence, so many changes have occurred in the landscape of healthcare that we now find ourselves confronting a new and even more exciting vista of challenges. In this last decade alone, the amount of research on the topic has nearly doubled, the number of medical schools actively incorporating the subject into their curriculum has grown exponentially, residency training programs are addressing spirituality, and several clinical-research centers have emerged around the country. In short, we have witnessed the growth of a new field of study that we call Health and Spirituality.
In response to these sweeping changes, on August 15, 2001, the former NIHR became the International Center for the Integration of Health and Spirituality (ICIHS). With the new name, came a creative new effort to provide direction and continuing leadership to this growing field of study internationally.
