History
It began development in 2005 by Shaun Taylor, and focused on constructing series of Personal Area Networks (Bluetooth) to connect users to nearby networks, which in turn connected to nearby networks, which in turn. . . and so on.
In March 2006, focus shifted to places and connections, and making real life connections with people based on their current positions. The PAN features of the earlier edition were slimmed down and kept in this release.
By July 2006, development ramped up and Swirl Mobile LLC was formed as a vehicle for Swirl Connect's development. At this time, the friend finder and presence features began to be integrated, and an even more refined PAN feature subset.
In early 2007, the private alpha was released near Swirl's headquarters in Raleigh, NC, but the public alpha wasn't released until late 2007.
Due to lack of marketing, Swirl's main user concentration is in Raleigh, NC, where they are popular on the various local campuses, including North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
