Destin has a rich historical heritage dating back to its early American Indian inhabitants. In the 1500's, Spanish explorers surveyed and mapped Florida, but Destin traces its immediate history to a fisherman named Captain Leonard Destin. The captain moved to the area from New London, Connecticut, around 1845 and pioneered the local fishing industry. Destin is now known as the world's luckiest fishing village and is home to Florida's largest fishing fleet.
