I Ching Counseling
Description
In the three-thousand-or-so years since the first written versions of the I Ching oracle first appeared in China, little seems to have changed about humanity and its most pressing problems. Then, as now, people and societies were beset with wars, natural disasters, government corruption, poverty, unemployment, illness, and crime. The challenges to individuals seeking to live a decent human life amid such circumstances were also similar among the ancients to what we see and feel within ourselves today: fear, guilt, despair, hatred, depression, violence, and conflict were as painfully present then as they are now. The I Ching was written as a catalog of the varieties of human suffering, and as a guide to healing. I feel that we can use it in the same way today, with the additional benefit of modern methods and insights of our psychological science.
The poet and philosopher, Lao Tzu, was certainly familiar with the I Ching; and he drew upon its guidance in forming his own insights on human trouble and the way free of it. He points us toward the source of help for human suffering in the 25th poem of his Tao Te Ching:
Each client who enters I Ching Counseling learns uniquely that this "something whole and formless" is not separate from him or herself; each client learns that the primordial voice of cosmic sanity truly "has a home in my mind." In I Ching Counseling, we learn together to uncover that energy of cosmic sanity, and to listen to the voice of Tao. To feel it is to grow; to hear it is to heal.
