Description
When I started knitting a few years ago, I bought a bundle of around thirty assorted knitting needles on Ebay. The seller had gone through her grandmother's attic and found a stash of old needles - some were paired, others were single or mismatched. I often found myself with only one of the size I needed for a project. On these occassions, I would either go out and buy a brand new pair or try (with mixed results) to get my gauge right with smaller or larger needles. What else could I do? Then, a couple of years ago, I purchased a book that not only vastly improved my knitting, but it gave me the idea to make my own needles (as creative and industrious as I fancy myself, this thought had never crossed my mind before). The book is called Knitting Without Tears, by Elizabeth Zimmerman. In it, the author makes a single point needle into a double point with the aid of a pencil sharpener. Not particularly elegant, but it did the job. I actually did use a pencil sharpener on the first pair I made, but have since graduated to various knives and rotary tools.
