How does search work on AboutUs
second note from Hugh
Hi Mark,
I do believe that I have a pretty good understanding of how search engines work, especially in the area of relevance. Some of the more interesting points about it are that pages that are the most relevant appear higher in the SE listings, the least relevant pages appear lower. Some pages do not appear at all or they are so poorly listed that they are virtually "out of sight".
The page I was specifically referring to is LegalClosing.com. It has page 1 #1 listings on Google such as this one:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=connecticut+mortgage+closings&btnG=Search
and this one does not even include Connecticut in the search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=commercial+mortgage+closings
There are number of equally worthy listings that use the most appropriate keywords and phrases for a mortgage closing site.
My bricklayer web site is TheTulsaBricklayer.com and Google lists it page #1, item #1 for just the single word "bricklayer": http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GFRC_enUS204US205&q=bricklayer
and for "tulsa bricklayer" it gets an even larger share of the pie: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4GFRC_enUS204US205&q=bricklayer+tulsa
My sites and my client sites are replete with top notch listing on Google and Yahoo. With this fact in mind I am wondering why the AboutUs search index has not added LegalClosing.com to the database. All terms at all related to mortgage closings come up empty, nada, zilch. If LegalClosing were in the database any appropriate search terms would show something. My conclusion is that the AboutUs LegalClosing.com page is actually not in the database index.
Am I making sense?
Do you have any ideas what I might be doing wrong OR what might be wrong with the search engine?
Well, Mark, it looks like it is you and me against the world. When do we attack? ;)
Thanks, Hugh
Note from Hugh
Hi Mark,
I'm making good progress on an number of my Wiki Pages but that is not the reason for my message. I have 2 reasons:
-- I wish to offer a well meaning suggestion regarding the Captcha utility that pops up from time to time.
My suggestions are twofold,
- First, provide clear and specific instructions for people who have never seen a Captcha utility before. It should mention something like "For security purposes please copy the text in the graphic into the empty box below and then click the Enter Key."
- Second, my opinion is that the captcha text, as presented, is really overkill; using a sledgehammer rather than a fly swatter for a mosquito. On one of my sites I utilize a large text version that is clear and easy to read and is totally unlikely to be hijacked by a robot. You can see it working here:
http://www.legalclosing.com/security/validate.php It is simple, clear, easy and user friendly and fast. AboutUs will grow faster if it is easier for more and more people.
Now I need a hand, a lesson, a "how to" regarding how to get the AboutUs search utility (Google, etc) to INCLUDE some of my pages that are presently being completely ignored. I must be leaving something out on the page, maybe I have something there that should not be there. Two of my pages are doing great: mycelticrings.com and 4trademark.com are just fine, but I don't know why. I want to make LegalClosing.com visible for people who are searching things related to the page content. I've tried many things that should logically be found, such as the unique name of the attorney, Hillard N. Einbinder, who owns the web site. His site is at the very top of Google in most of the keywords and phrases that are important to his real estate mortgage closings business, but it is nowhere found in the AboutUs search system.
What can I do to fix this so that I can learn the means so that I can use it on all of my new AboutUs pages?
I sincerely appreciate your help.
Hugh Brecher
