Your Host, Irvin Heminger, and his son Shaun, have been entertaining chili cookers, and cook-off audiences for more than fifteen years as members of the King Kong show team. Our 1
showmanship win, was at the 1991 Czhilispeil chili cook-off in Flatonia, Texas. We were apart of the “Out House Chili” cooking team . The show concept was a man was riding on the back of a gorilla. The gorilla was short and Irvin walked on short wooden platforms. It was a gag more than a show, but we won 5
place that year. This was the start of many shows. Irvin became well known as “The Gorilla Man.” The short gorilla became a 6-foot gorilla named “King Kong.” King Kong was a central character and theme of all shows until “2000". The new gorilla costume was redesigned, built, and operated by Irvin. Irvin would walk on contractors’ stilts that were part of the costume’s body and legs. False legs were attached to Irvin’s hips and hung over King Kong’s shoulders giving the appearance that Irvin was riding on King Kong’s back.
