The Troodos Mountains extend southwest from the capital, Nicosia, to the ports of Limassol and Pafos on the coast. The dramatic Kyrenia mountain range, thrusts northeastwards into the knife-shaped Karpas (panhandle) peninsula, which points directly at the coasts of Syria and Turkey.
