The bamboo I use for shakuhachi meditation flutes is commonly known as Torachiku or Tiger Bamboo. Botanically classified as Phyllostachys nigra f. punctata, it is a unique and exceptionally beautiful species of black bamboo which originates in Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's main islands. While the sap is down during the winter months, each cane, carefully selected for size and quality, is harvested and cured in the traditional manner.
