--- Welcome to HorseHage! ---

Description

It all began back in 1976 when a chance remark was made by a vet to Mark Westaway, a farmer who at the time was cultivating potatoes near Paignton in Devon. "Why can't someone make a forage especially for horses, instead of feeding something meant for cattle?"

The idea germinated in Mark Westaway's mind. He remembered when hay was made in a rick and before feeding to horses the outside was cut off to reveal sweet smelling hay inside. The reason for the good quality was because the grass fermented slightly inside the rick, and the dry matter level was correct.

Mark Westaway set out to recreate this process by cutting and baling grass when it had wilted but was not dry, and then compressing the bale into a double-skinned plastic bag. Several years were spent researching the right procedures and packaging, and in particular developing a machine to do the job. In the end the machinery was produced by Mark Westaway himself with the help of a good engineer, Roy Parris, who still works for the company today.
