The international financial crisis in 2008 resulted in fundamental changes at Fortis. All the groupÂ’s banking and insurance activities in the Netherlands were taken into the ownership of the Dutch state in October 2008. The remaining banking operations were acquired by the Belgian state, which subsequently transferred 75% of them to BNP Paribas in May 2009. At the same time, Fortis Bank purchased 25% of the Belgian insurance activities.
