Description
In April 1993 a couple of local lads with too much time on their hands, decided owning a radio station might be an interesting way to earn a living. One, a former farmer, the other a broadcaster, they approached Radio New Zealand (RNZ) about the possibility of purchasing its Gore based operation.
4ZG, as it was then known, had been reduced to just 4 hours of local broadcast per day a year earlier, and in the eyes of many was dying a slow and painful death.
A year long negotiating process followed, one which culminated on Monday, April 11th 1994 at 6.00am. 4ZG became Hokonui Gold broadcasting on 558 AM.
