Hiveminds Magazine is owned and operated by Carl McDade. Originally Hiveminds Magazine was a business where college students could gain pratical experience by working with open source content management systems written in PHP. As of 2006 Hiveminds Magazine has become a journalistic and resource website covering the use and developement of open source content management systems. The main purpose of the Magazine is to review installations and usage of open source content management software using different scenarios. This coverage is regardless of the language or database system used in the project.
Why and what for?
I feel that objectivity is something that really does not exist in the opensource world. The religious, political or sect like evangelism of individual software projects gets in the way of gaining practical and useful knowledge. Users of open source software are frequently subjected to disinformation and abuse. They are not allowed to freely voice their opinion or seek the truth without fear of persecution. Frequently competative attitudes or the lack of social skills leads to bad experiences for those turning to open source. You only have to take a look at what happens on some mailing lists and bulliten boards to get an example of this behaviour. Hiveminds Magazine attempts to deliver knowledge in an unbiased manner and provide and open platform for consumers of open source software and services.
The repository
Hiveminds Magazine maintains its own repository of opensource software. The reason for this is ease the process of downloading,installing, modifying and using software from different projects. Frequently software may need to be bug fixed, modified for use or public consumption. The resulting software is stored in our repository and in some cases shared with our reading audience.
