The Historic America Mission
Our mission is to provide people with an Internet platform structure to record their local history. Website content is intended to show respect for our heritage, to educate youth and future generations, and to inspire our communities. The purpose of our partnership with area schools is to provide a unique, valuable, useful learning experience. We hope to provide area students with the means of connecting to their local histories in a fun, educational, valuable way while strengthening their writing and research skills.
What your student will be doing
As researchers for Historic America's "Historic Hometown Project," the students will research historic people, buildings, events, and organizations that are of interest to them. In the classroom, the students are provided with the opportunity to strengthen their writing and research skills while producing something of value for themselves and for the community. Your student will focus on the content and the process of writing in an academic fashion. Additionally, each student will have the chance to publish his or her work on an established, credible website. The Internet is a valuable teaching tool, and we hope that the experience will help your student realize the benefits of both technology and writing.
Expectations
The classroom teacher will have certain standards for his or her own classroom work. For our purposes, not every article will be published on the site. Articles will be judged by Historic America based on content, with an emphasis on credible material. The articles must also be editorially ready to be published. The website will choose which articles meet the high standards and expectations of the material within Historic America sites. Articles that have plagiarized material will not be considered for the site. We hope that practicing the research and writing process will be a valuable learning experience for each student involved, even if his or her work is not considered for the site.
