About Us
Risa Jaroslow & Dancers (High Tide Dance, Inc.) creates new dance that reflects and speaks to people’s lives; uses dance-making to forge connections between people; and includes people of different ages, backgrounds and skills in the dance-making process. The Company is devoted to exploring the ways performance and community work can be merged, each nourishing the other.
Through performances, master classes and community workshops for people of all ages and backgrounds, Risa Jaroslow & Dancers seeks to expand the definition of dance: what it is and who can participate. Jaroslow’s choreography has explored many social issues, including immigration and becoming “American;” the consequences of female voice and silence; the combination of power and terror that defines mid-life; and the meaning of work in people’s lives. Her work often includes original musical compositions performed live, and integrates text.
Much of the Company’s work is generated in partnership with community organizations. Jaroslow and Company dancers have worked extensively with the varied communities on the Lower East Side, as well as elsewhere in New York City and the nation. They have conducted workshops for senior adults, adult literacy groups, youth groups, groups serving the disabled, and women on welfare. Participants are representative of their diverse communities, encompassing a wide range of races, ethnicities, classes and education levels.
