We live on the high desert of Southeastern Oregon where enjoying the sunsets, and the smell of sagebrush after a warm rain, is just a part of our every day life. With the help of today's modern technology, we are able to live this remote life style but still reach out and touch you.
If you listen really hard, you still might hear the sound of a buckboard creaking down a dusty road, or hear the sound of spurs worn on a cowboy boot as their rowels roll across a kitchen floor. Think of wide-open spaces: Harney County is 10,180 Square Miles of High Desert where the cattle far outnumber the people. It’s where the sagebrush meets the mountains; a country where Pete French, the Cattle Baron of long ago, used to hang his hat; where wild horses still run free. Drewsey, Oregon, once known as Gouge Eye, sits below rim rocks where not much has changed since it's earliest existence.
A few people come and a few people go; cattle roam the same streets of long ago. A two-room schoolhouse sits at one end of this quiet little town, and there is never a line to wait in at the post office. We have no stoplights, no yellow lines and no cross walks. We have clean air and clear skies that seem to magnify every star. The only noise you may hear is a bawl of a cow, a flock of geese flying overhead, or the cries of a coyote letting you know he's still around. Ranch life is a one-on-one challenge with Mother Nature. She sometimes gives us more than we bargain for. However, the sounds of cattle as you drive them to range, the smell of freshly cut hay, and the glorious sunsets are the rewards of a hard but simpler life.
