Description
The Herald-Banner is Hunt County’s oldest business institution, tracing its roots to April 1869 when J.C. Bayne started the Greenville Herald. The competing Greenville Banner was started in 1881 when J.F. Mitchell came here from Pittsburg, Texas, bringing with him a young apprentice newspaper man, Oscar Branch Colquitt.
Colquitt later entered politics and went on to become Governor of Texas in 1910. The Greenville Morning Herald became a daily in 1890 under the ownership of E.W.Harris. A short time later, it was sold to the W.C. Poole family, which ran the newspaper from 1914 to 1956. They were the last independent owners, selling to the Harte-Hanks chain which also bought the “Banner” and merged the two newspapers.
The present building at 2305 King Street is dedicated to Miss Ollie Coon, who worked for the Greenville Banner (and later the Herald-Banner) from 1908 to 1968. Herald-Banner Publications is now owned by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. and is comprised of not only the Herald-Banner in Greenville, but also the Rockwall County Herald Banner, the Royse City Herald Banner and the Commerce Journal.
