Description

Each piece of wood is hand-selected for beauty and color.

Watching my father work his lathe was inspiring. Seeing the chips curl across his hands and over his shoulder left this 7-year-old a little awestruck. He worked the wood and then held it in his hand when he was finished. Dad would feel it with his fingers or the palm of his hand; he looked, smelled and admired what he had done. I did not fully understand this phenomenon until many years later, when I found myself caught up in my own passions for wood.

Writing instruments are among the oldest tools known to man. The first attempt at an inkjet printer was when the aboriginal people of Australia and New Zealand held the pigments in their mouths and sprayed around their hand in an effort to leave their "mark" on the world. I guess I can't say when the first writing instrument was invented, but it is at least as old as written history, isn't it? A stick or a stone was used to draw or paint or carve a message. We cherish and value those markings and preserve the sites where we find them.

Do you remember using those big fat pencils to write big letters and small letters in first grade? Some of those great writings have been preserved among mother's keepsakes. Do you remember when you first got to use your father's fountain pen? It was so big and so beautiful. The bright gold and silver flashed and danced. Dad could write so beautifully with it. Later I got my own, because it felt so well-balanced and made me feel good about myself. Even when it leaked in my shirt pocket, it was handsome and boosted my self-esteem.
