- HBS began operations in 1985 after the owner, Jon A. Johnson, realized a need in the Middle Tennessee area for an independent agency that specialized in health benefits, and such related products. As managed care was introduced and network alliances were being formed, consumers needed a control point where they could turn to find answers to their questions about these new products. During the mid-80's the insurance companies began to introducing an "alphabet soup" of new ways to deliver health coverage. HMO, PPO, and POS plans were replacing traditional major medical plans. Doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and out patient providers were encouraged to join networks which promised a steady flow of patients, fast and accurate reimbursements, and a no hassle claim service. Many doctors, skeptical of these new "managed care" systems formed IPA (Independent Practice Associations). The hospitals, also realizing they were being forced to accept this "managed care" system, formed alliances in order to keep their beds full and the profit/loss statements in black ink.
