Canoe, kayak and tubing trips in Western North Carolina on the French Broad River - Headwaters Outfitters
Description
Celebrating our 14th Year in Business!
Headwaters Outfitters, Inc., a family owned business, was incorporated on the fifth of March in 1992 by a group of friends; two husband/wife teams, Sammy and Mary Kay Cathey, David and Debi Whitmire, and a mother/son team Art Fox and Sarah Fabans. A house in downtown Rosman was rented from Sammy's parents Bill and Wanell Cathey. We purchased an eight passenger van, a fleet of 10 canoes, and 10 mountain bikes. We were off to a start, operating April -October and offering canoe trips on the French Broad River and guided mountain bike tours. With two seasons under our belt we realized that the traffic flow into the business had not grown. It was evident that a move to a more visible location was crucial to the success of the business. Almost magically the property at the "Forks of The River" was put up for sale. The Whitmire's along with David's father James and his stepmother Bobbie purchased the property forming a new corporation called Confluence Enterprises. Confluence rented it to Headwaters Outfitters.
The start of our third season found Headwaters operating at "The Forks of the River," also known as the confluence of the French Broad River . With this move several programming changes occurred. The introduction of river kayaks to the program proved to be a very successful. As of 2005 Headwaters is operating with approximately 40 kayaks in our fleet. The guided mountain bike program was discontinued. We began to dabble in retail and thus began the "River Shop." Thanks to our Program Director Lec Hobbs, the River Shop has developed into a well established "Canoe Shop" and is well known for its variety of river merchandise and excellent customer service. We currently are a dealer for Old Town Canoe, Mad River Canoe, Wilderness Systems, Dagger, Perception, and the newest addition Wenonah Canoe. Even the 100 year flood of 1994 which occurred at the end of our third season and crested 12 inches inside the river shop did not hinder our growth.
River tubing was the new program addition as we began our fourth year of operation. We transported guests up 215 to the Forest Service boundary line Alligator Rock, issued them a lifejacket and inter-tube and let them float back to our River Shop. This program proved to be tremendously successful. After several seasons of drought we moved our tubing adventures to the main river. This move gave our guests several different tubing options. We now offer several different lengths of tubing trips but no longer provide trips from Alligator Rock.
