Harperspace Gallery - "A Family Affair"

Description

"Harperspace" is how I refer to my state of consciousness when I am totally immersed in the creative process, unaware of the passage of time and the external world around me. It is an altered state, much like meditation, and it is a very pleasant place to be.

For most of my life, "Harperspace" was a solitary, internal place - a retreat from the busyness of everyday life, a safe haven in an increasingly fast-paced and chaotic world. In 1999, Harperspace finally manifested on the earthly plane, finding a home in the old Mooney Fuel and Grain Building, where the Wellfleet Artisans' Cooperative was then in operation. It was there that I experienced for the first time the sense of being part of an artistic community, and my artwork flourished. For the first year, Harperspace maintained a low profile, operating more as an "open-studio" than as a gallery. In the second year, when Sandpiper Gallery and Harmon Gallery took up residence in the front of the building, I decided it was time for Harperspace to "go public," and transformed my creation-space into a show-place for my work. "The Galleries at 95 Commercial Street" took on a collective identity in the Wellfleet Art Gallery Scene, and became known as one of the "most happening" Saturday night gathering spots in town.

After five years on my own, I began to feel the need to diversify and expand Harperspace to include the work of other artists, not only to add variety to the exhibitions, but also because I wanted to share ideas, energy and enthusiasm with other creative people in my intimate circle. The first step was to entice my father, Fine Arts Photographer David Ritchey, to move to Cape Cod by proposing the idea of a "father-daughter" gallery. Once he was "on board," we then included my brother, Musician Mac Ritchey, by asking him to perform at our openings. Further brainstorming led us to the realization that we had many other relatives and close friends who were also top-notch artists in one medium or another, and that it would be uniquely fulfilling to have these people come together in a shared creative endeavor. They agreed, and the "Harperspace Family" now embraces a number of multi-faceted, talented people who, while they have many different interests and pursuits, all share a love of art in its many forms and the gift of artistic vision.
