- David Hanson President and Director. Hanson is regarded as a world leader in robotics. The core innovations of HRI spring from Hanson's research in materials, mechanics and software. WIRED called Hanson's work "genius", Science called him "head of his class" in social robots, and BBC called his robots "among the world's most advanced". Hanson has published in fields of materials science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and robotics, and holds one patent with two more pending. Hanson and his robots have been featured in the NY Times, Popular Science, Science, IEEE Spectrum, WIRED, BBC, CNN, discovery Channel, and other media venues. In addition to material science and robotics, the secret to Hanson's robotics is artistry. Each robot is a four dimensional sculpture - every expression is sculpted via the action of the mechanics and polymer. With a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, Hanson sculpted for Universal Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering before transitioning into Disney's Technical Development, where he headed several robotic and materials projects. Hanson's art sculptures have garnered positive reviews in the L.A. Times, NY Times, Washington Post, and CNN (see: www.portfolio.com/davidhanson). Hanson has received awards in both art and engineering, including an AAAI 1st place prize, Cooper Hewwit Triennial award, National Science Foundation STTR award, co-receipt of NASA's Space Act Award, and nomination for a WTN World Technology Award. Hanson has spoken at numerous venues, including DARPA, MIT, Dartmouth, Brown, Google, Sandia Labs, AAAS, UCSD, IEEE and AAAI. Hanson founded Hanson Robotics Inc in late 2003 to commercialize social robot characters and constituent technologies. Hanson will defend his Ph.D. in October 2006 from the University of Texas, Dallas.
