Description
Our History
Following the 1892 fire that destroyed much of Milwaukee’s thriving, industrial Third Ward, Theodore L. Hansen saw that the long-term prospects for the hop and malt business were uncertain. The fire, however, had created a shortage of commercial warehouse space in the Third Ward, where the Milwaukee River emptied into the city’s harbor on Lake Michigan. Selling his business, Hansen Hop & Malt Co., to a larger competitor five years later, Theodore commissioned the building of a four-story brick warehouse complete with basement, three elevators and two firewalls. It was completed in 1904 and articles of incorporation for Hansen Storage Company were filed on June 16th of that year.
Theodore’s foresight of what the community and his customers would need became a hallmark of the Hansen Storage Company over the next century. He and his descendents would demonstrate an almost uncanny knack for seeing what the next need and the next solution would be for the growing storage and transportation industries.
William C. Hansen, President
As president, Bill is the fourth generation to lead the Hansen Storage Company. He began his career in the family business as a teen, unloading boxcars, stacking sacks of dried milk and driving a delivery truck. He joined his father in the family business on a full-time basis in 1968 after graduating Notre Dame University.
